Institute of Puppetry Arts at Mermaid Theatre

Workshops that spark creativity and imagination.

 
 

Institute instructors have been warmly welcomed in worldwide locations, with workshop frequently offered in conjunction with Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia’s global touring.  The Institute’s faculty members include professional associates who are recognized experts in the fields of theatre, music, dance, design, and construction.  We offer a standard workshop to presenters who are bringing a Mermaid production to their venue, which takes place on stage and allows children or adults to learn the basics of Mermaid's unique style of puppetry in a hands-on setting.  For more information about our workshops and bookings, Contact Us.

About the Instructor - Struan Robertson

Director of Education & Outreach & ANIMOTION Instructor, Struan graduated from Bishop’s University in Lennoxville, Quebec with a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre and Fine Art.  At Bishop’s he studied puppetry under the direction of Tim Gosley and refined his skills through the production of, “A Hunger Artist”. After University, Struan received puppetry training at Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia’s Institute of Puppetry Arts through ANIMOTION, Mermaid’s highly acclaimed Puppetry Intensive series. 

Following Struan’s educational training, he was hired by Mermaid Theatre to tour as a professional theatre artist in Code Green and Goodnight Moon and the Runaway Bunny that took him throughout Canada, the United States, Hong Kong, and Macau. He was hired as a full-time production employee in 2011 and since then has been responsible for assisting in production design, creating transformative sets, props, and puppet construction. Struan is a sought-after senior workshop instructor having taught many puppetry workshops to hundreds of children in Nova Scotia and in China. In 2018, Struan was promoted to Director of Education and Outreach for the Institute of Puppetry Arts and looks forward to implementing new and creative programming for international and local markets.

Fall Workshops - Found Object Puppetry

Participants will learn how to create their own puppet.  The puppet will be created using common, everyday items. Additional materials will be supplied.  Under supervision, the participants will have an opportunity to decorate their creations and develop the puppet’s character and costume. 

Using the puppet they constructed, participants will learn basic skills and techniques of puppet manipulation and will create original stories told by their found object puppet.

In-Service Day Workshops - Hants County

No school, perfect! Come to Mermaid Theatre and adventure into the world of puppetry. Each In-service day workshop explores a different theme.  Under supervision, participants will have an opportunity to decorate their creations and develop the puppet’s character and costume. Participants will learn how to create their own puppet.  The puppet will be created using common, everyday items. Additional materials will be supplied. *Space is limited.


Half-Day $40;

Late pick will be an additional $25 (late pick up between 4PM-5PM).

Pre-School - Puppet Play

Pre-School puppet play is were famous children’s stories come to life. First, we read a famous children’s story followed by making a simple puppet based on the book. Each class is a different story and children will build a new puppet for each workshop. This is a perfect opportunity to mix and mingle with local parents/guardians and one another’s children while having fun. Social time, re-defined. Coffee and tea will be provided.
